Do you Smell What God Has Cooking?

So a couple of weeks ago during worship time at church the worship leader, Adam, was talking about Jacob wrestling with God. Brad leans into me and whispers Jacob was smelling what God was cooking. Now you can’t imagine how much that tickled me. Yes, it’s true we are wrestling fans and big time fans of “The Rock!” So when Brad said that it immediately became part of our every day conversation…. “Do you smell what God is cooking?” It tells us in the bible that Jacob wrestled with God and was never the same again. You see Jacob was a lying cheating spoiled little brat who deceived and destroyed to get his own way. Issac and Rebkah had twins Esau and Jacob….Now right from the belly these two were at odds. Scripture says in Genesis 25:23 The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the older, and the older, will serve the younger.” Well long story short Jacob tricked both his brother and his dad to become the one to have the blessing. Then he ran. He didn’t want to wrath of Esau coming down on him. So Jacob goes to his uncle’s on his Mother’s side to find some rest and get on with his life. Well Jacob must not of understood the concept of you reap what you sow. So he told his uncle Laban that he would work for him for his daughter Rachel. (it was love at first sight for Jacob) well as it would turn out the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Perhaps Jacob got his deceiving gene from Uncle Laban. Because Uncle Laban thought well you know Jacob wants Rachel but Rachel has an older sister Leah who hasn’t yet married soooo I think I’ll dress her up for the wedding and give her to Jacob for a bride! Well when the shoe was on the other foot Jacob wasn’t so pleased about deception. So he worked seven more years for Uncle Laban and got himself the bride he originally wanted. So Jacob starts deceiving Uncle Laban by making his flocks increase and stronger and Laban’s weaker…then Jacob decides to flee from good old Uncle Laban with his daughters and his grandchildren. Deception doesn’t make you popular. So of course Jacob wants to go home but that means dealing with the brother you ousted…so he basically sends everyone ahead including his kids and his wives to soften the blow of his return to Esau. Then Jacob is left alone. Just him and God and all the dumb things he did to get ahead in life. If you look in Genesis 32:22-31 it will give you the exact account of the wrestling match. Bottom line God touch Jacob’s hip and he never walked the same again. And in that wrestling match Jacob asks God to bless him change him and he did. He went from being Jacob to being called Israel because he struggled with God and man and overcame! In the end Jacob meets Esau eating humble pie saying I’m your servant and may I find favour in your eyes. Esau embraced his brother that day and forgiveness was found. (If you want to read it for yourself it’s Genesis chapters 25-33) I could go on and on and tie all this into our daily lives but I think you can figure it out all I have to say is; “do you smell what God has cooking??”
