There is a trend in our society that if you're a man A REAL MAN you don't show your emotion, and for heaven's sake you don't cry that is just a sign of weakness.
My oldest son often mocks me because I'm soooo emotional. Well yes I am! I feel as if it's a Godly quality and not a sign of weakness at all. He'll say to me “Oh, you are such a girl, you cry at everything!” Well I tend to respond with Jesus was emotional he cried...you calling Jesus a girl? And if we are to be like him then shouldn't we and more specifically men show emotions?
Scriptures teach the need for balance in our lives and attitudes.
Jesus, like most of us had his group of BFFs. Lazarus, Mary and Martha they were siblings that all lived together. They lived in Bethany and Jesus often stayed with them when he was ministering in the area.
As it would happen Lazarus got sick and died. So by the time Jesus arrives Lazarus has already been dead four days. Martha went out to meet him when she heard he was there. Martha says to Jesus "if you had of been here my brother wouldn't of died." Jesus at this point remains composed not yet showing his emotions. He does tell Martha that Lazarus will come back to life. Then Martha goes in to get Mary and tells her the teacher is here and he is asking for you. Mary runs out to meet him and throws herself at his feet and says "Lord if you had been here my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw Mary and the Jews with her crying he was deeply moved and troubled. Then Jesus started to cry. Entirely human entirely a man and crying.
Some of the Jews were like, see how much he loved his friend.
Others were like didn't he heal the blind couldn't he of come and healed his friend. You know the jerks that like to hit a guy when they are done. "Oh he lost his friend let's take the opportunity to make it his fault."
Long story short Jesus didn't heal Lazarus he raised him from the grave. Gave him back to his family! How awkward would that of been for the above mentioned jerks complaining about him not caring enough to arrive before he died to heal him.
If you read through the 4 gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke & John you will see that Jesus cried a lot!
The Book of Ecclesiastes. It tells us that there is a time for everything under heaven; "A time to give birth, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to uproot what is planted. A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to tear down, and a time to build up. A time to weep (AKA cry), and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance. A time to throw stones, and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, and a time to shun embracing. A time to search, and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep, and a time to throw away. A time to tear apart, and a time to sew together; A time to be silent, and a time to speak. A time to love, and a time to hate; A time for war, and a time for peace." (Ecclesiastes 3:1-9).
So I have a question guys - Can you cry? Can you show emotions? It's scripturally ok you know. Emotions don't make you less of a man if anything they make you more of a man.
If we want to look at it health wise you know that bottling up emotions is never healthy!
Scientists are finding more and more proof of the remarkable way our emotions can affect our immune system.
A well known psychologist, James Pennebaker, has demonstrated that emotional expressions can benefit health by the simple device of keeping a diary. The diary provides an outlet for emotional expression and not only appears to have a positive emotional effect but improves immune function as well. In fact written emotional expression has been researched in terms of benefits to physical health, physiological functioning and daily living activities; in each case with positive findings. Could the simple act of keeping a diary be a useful compromise for men and bridge the gap between their inability to transmit, receive and manage emotional messages?
So guys if you're just not at the place to show your emotions as Jesus did perhaps you can buy a diary and write them down...maybe it will make you feel better, emotionally, physically and spiritually. BE A REAL MAN BE EMOTIONAL!
The full Biblical account:
Jesus Brings Lazarus Back to Life
11 Lazarus, who lived in Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived, was sick. 2 (Mary was the woman who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was the one who was sick.)
3 So the sisters sent a messenger to tell Jesus, “Lord, your close friend is sick.”
4 When Jesus heard the message, he said, “His sickness won’t result in death. Instead, this sickness will bring glory to God so that the Son of God will receive glory through it.”
5 Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. 6 Yet, when Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was for two more days.
7 Then, after the two days, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”
8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, not long ago the Jews wanted to stone you to death. Do you really want to go back there?”
9 Jesus answered, “Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day don’t stumble, because they see the light of this world.10 However, those who walk at night stumble because they have no light in themselves.”
11 After Jesus said this, he told his disciples, “Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, and I’m going to Bethany to wake him.”
12 His disciples said to him, “Lord, if he’s sleeping, he’ll get well.”
13 Jesus meant that Lazarus was dead, but the disciples thought Jesus meant that Lazarus was only sleeping. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 but I’m glad that I wasn’t there so that you can grow in faith. Let’s go to Lazarus.”
16 Thomas, who was called Didymus, said to the rest of the disciples, “Let’s go so that we, too, can die with Jesus.”
17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. 18 (Bethany was near Jerusalem, not quite two miles away.) 19 Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha told Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask him.”
23 Jesus told Martha, “Your brother will come back to life.”
24 Martha answered Jesus, “I know that he’ll come back to life on the last day, when everyone will come back to life.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the one who brings people back to life, and I am life itself. Those who believe in me will live even if they die. 26 Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe that?”
27 Martha said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who was expected to come into the world.”
28 After Martha had said this, she went back home and whispered to her sister Mary, “The teacher is here, and he is calling for you.”
29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Jesus. 30 (Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still where Martha had met him.) 31 The Jews who were comforting Mary in the house saw her get up quickly and leave. So they followed her. They thought that she was going to the tomb to cry.32 When Mary arrived where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33 When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who were crying with her, he was deeply moved and troubled.
34 So Jesus asked, “Where did you put Lazarus?”
They answered him, “Lord, come and see.”
35 Jesus cried. 36 The Jews said, “See how much Jesus loved him.” 37 But some of the Jews asked, “Couldn't this man who gave a blind man sight keep Lazarus from dying?”
38 Deeply moved again, Jesus went to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone covering the entrance. 39 Jesus said, “Take the stone away.”
Martha, the dead man’s sister, told Jesus, “Lord, there must already be a stench. He’s been dead for four days.”
40 Jesus said to her, “Didn't I tell you that if you believe, you would see God’s glory?” 41 So the stone was moved away from the entrance of the tomb.
Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you for hearing me. 42 I've known that you always hear me. However, I've said this so that the crowd standing around me will believe that you sent me.” 43 After Jesus had said this, he shouted as loudly as he could, “Lazarus, come out!”
44 The dead man came out. Strips of cloth were wound around his feet and hands, and his face was wrapped with a handkerchief. Jesus told them, “Free Lazarus, and let him go.”
I never cry. Men usually cry in the shower where no one can see lol
ReplyDeleteEric thanks so much for commenting people don't often leave feedback! So when it happens it I'm very happy! Guys have unfortunately been trained to stifle a lot of emotion and therefore it's hard to let go!
