Helpful Parenting points
• Discipline works best when you administer it calmly.
• Praise for good behaviour –catch them being good.
• Hitting is a behaviour that is copied from others.
Children that hit have learned that violence is powerful and gets them results. They can be attention seeking or wishing to feel powerful!
• Avoid power struggles with children.
• Show your child how to solve problems with words.
• Choose to be a better parent to your kids than what was given to you. Be the parent you wish you had.
• Be consistent with your methods of discipline.
Your child should learn to understand there are predictable consequences for his/her actions.
• Set up a daily routine and try to stick to it each day.
• Provide a safe environment!
Provide an environment that encourages exploration, but protects your child.
• Set limits and rules and don’t give in.
• Time outs
– Time out is a way of disciplining your child for misbehaviour without raising your hand or your voice. Time-out involves removing your child from the good stuff in life, for a small amount of time, immediately following misbehavior. Do use the same location each time. The upper limit should be one quiet minute for every year your child has been alive. So if you have a 2 year old, aim for two quiet minutes. (time out doesn’t start until crying or tantrum stops) Timers can be helpful.
